How to subscribe in a big way? 2 Years ago Karma: 0
Hi all

I'm not a heavy forum user (this one, or others) - but prompted by a comment in a posting by Stella, to the effect that using it needs to become a habit and habits only happen if you DO something about it..., I'm aiming to use it more.

Apart from anything else, I "owe" the forum several postings (reflections of offline calls I've had with Stella following HTBABFT last year...). Look out for them, and if you don't see them, pester me!!

But for now, my question:

I can see that one can "subscribe" to an individual thread (and thus be notified of new postings on that thread) but is it possible to subscribe WHOLESALE to the forum (in other words to be notified by email of any and every new posting)?

Hi Jonathan,

I've had a look into this and unfortunately you can't set it up to receive all. I think the principle is that these forums can get very large with thousands of threads and you could end up over loading your inbox. I currently send an update every couple of weeks or so entitled "Recent Frum Topics" and this has links to all the new topics since the last one. Just click on each link when you receive it to make sure you don't miss anything and then subscribe to the threads that you are interested in.

As we get bigger and bigger I can do this more frequently.

I hope this helps and hope to see you on 26th.

There is one way that you can find out latest posts without using the forums 'subscribe' feature.

Use the RSS feed generated by the forum.

RSS is a fabulous way to keep up to date with sites that have lots of new content but is not as popular as it could be because it is a bit geeky

Check out this fab video on YouTube to find out how RSS works and how it may help:

To get all posts by RSS:

  • Look at the adress bar in your browser and notice the little orange icon at the end of the web address

  • click on the little orange icon - it opens up a new webpage with summaries of all the latest forum posts with options on how to subscribe in you feedreader

  • Depending on your browser, you can even add this to your 'bookmarks' folder, so that all the latest posts appear there and it is updated automatically

If you follow a lot of blogs, news sites or forums RSS saves a massive amount of time because the new entries come to you rather than you having to go to them - it also keeps your email inbox free.

I love helping people (especially trainers!) make the web work for them, if you need any more help, drop me a message
