This was my first attendance at a BFLG meeting, and it was brilliant. Big enough to mingle, small enough to feel personal, and everyone was so friendly and helpful. No 'business card thrusters' here!
My question to the group was cover a lot of material effectively, and in a short space of time. Some good ideas came out from Helen and Jerry in particular, that included:
- Using storyboards and asking people to take you on a journey from current state to future state.
- use an ice-breaker not to introduce the topic, but to get people into a positive state (and so reduce the time spent of overcoming blocks and barriers)
- utilise sites such as
www.puzzlemakers.com and
www.trainerbubble.com for short, sharp exercises
- make the course competitive (used successfully in the past for in-house courses)
- 'silly sentences' or folded writing, foillowed by a snowball fight.
- doing a cocktail review at the end.
One other idea that came out to help reduce the amount of content a client expects to see in a programme is to ask them to describe in sensory terms what they will see, hear and feel that is different after the training. This will provide clues about what is essential. the other topics requested can be provided in the delegate materials and form the basis of suggested follow-up/related development.
