How to Avoid Paralysis by Presentation
|
|
|
Hello,
In a recent online article, Stella drew a parallel between the state induced by presenters
who get information across using slides and how she'd felt whilst in a light hypnotic
trance.
Now as you may know, Stella's a get up and go kind of person but at a recent presentation,
being talked at for 30 minutes in a warm room, with dimmed lighting, and lots of still
people, she became unable to rouse herself to do or say anything; unusually for Stella,
she felt too paralysed to act!

Translate this state of inertia into the learning arena where what we need is for
audiences to actively engage with material, to be able to critically evaluate how it's
of use in their work, and then to act on their learning back in their real world.
How can people achieve workplace results from their learning, if they've not even felt
able to join in?
So here's 5 tips to avoid paralysis by presentation:
1. Make sure your room is well-ventilated and well-lit - by natural air and light.
2. Keep your learners refreshed with water and brain friendly snacks.
3. Ensure regular movement - make it the norm, not the exception.
4. Interact regularly with your audience with questions and mini-reviews.
5. Increase your use of different learning media - all it takes is a little imagination!
